Although I grew up in Japan, my understanding of the importance of silk to its industrialization didn't begin until 2009 when I joined Maggie Backman's Silk Study Tour to Japan.
Wanting to know more about the fiber which I was dyeing every day led me back to Japan where we visited dyers, weavers, sericulturists, filature mills, museums and more. That curiosity has continued and the result is that with Maggie's retirement from the business, I was asked to take over in 2011.
This biennial tour (2009, 2011, 2013, and the upcoming 2015) is not only a wonderful way to learn about silk but a great way to gain an appreciation for Japan and its culture.
