Tekumo exploration in indigo, texture, cloth and stitch.
This wall piece includes many tekumo shibori bits that were created as demonstration pieces for my recently completed online tekumo workshop. Tekumo is a shibori binding technique using a small needle hook attached to a stand.
Tightly wrapped thread around the cloth creates compression of the motif that resists dye and in this case, also discharge (removal of color through chemical process).
Mostly made of old and recycled Japanese cotton cloth, the textural aspect of the bound cloth is preserved and stitched into the piece. Raw edges tell you about the weave, selvedges speak to the fiber and the weaver and are left intact and visible. The moon is silk jacquard with a cloud motif. The lower center piece is deep dyed indigo, tekumo bound, discharged, and overdyed with garden marigolds.
The top background piece is old boro- patched and stained, indigo dyed and collected on a past trip to Japan, reminding me of the usefulness and preciousness of what we have.
The moon circles our circle of the earth. Stitched circles connect my thoughts, complete some thoughts, while others run off the edge.
I recommend hanging this somewhere where viewers can touch and explore the textural surface.
The piece measures 14” x 42” and includes the wood hanger. Shipping will be via Priority mail with tracking to US addresses only.
Purchase of this also includes a 15 minute video chat with me to talk about the piece if you desire. Contact me and we will work out the details.
